The Michigan Road

The morning began, as so many of our ‘let’s-go-on-vacation’ mornings do, far too early. We woke at 4 a.m., ate and packed the last few items in the car. This was—by far—our smoothest departure ever. By 6 a.m., we were off!



We followed the Michigan Road (formerly the Dixie Highway) north from Indianapolis to South Bend, Indiana. We followed US-421 north to IN-29, and in Logansport picked up IN-25 to Rochester. From Rochester to Plymouth, we followed old US-31. Our play list for the morning included Tchaikovsky (Fairies! Cannons! Church bells!) and Charles Trenet. Even though Chris and I speak French, we can’t really understand a lot of what Charles Trenet is singing. We can, however, discern that he sings a lot about rain (and also his mother). We have thus dubbed him “the precipitation crooner.”

Our first small stop was so that Chris could indulge his passion for semi-defunct roadways; we stopped at an old Tippecanoe River Bridge Abutment.



After taking a few pictures and getting our feet thoroughly soaked from the dew-soaked grass, we clambered back into the car. North of Plymouth, we merged onto current US-31 and continued north to Michigan.



We followed US-31 up to exit 36, and then followed the Blue Star Highway through Douglas and Saugatuck and into Holland.
