Reuben Details
Sandwich Name: The Salutatorian ($7.25)
Menu Description: The classic Reuben; thinly sliced lean corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing grilled on deli rye bread.
Included Side Items: French fries and pickle spear
Presentation: The sandwich was cut diagonally and served on a white plate next to French fries and a pickle spear. The marbled rye bread was toasted, and Swiss cheese lined both slices. The Swiss on each end of the sandwich was topped with Thousand Island dressing, inside of which rested the corned beef and sauerkraut. Everything on the plate was dusted with parsley flakes.

The Truant's Taverne dining room is located in the basement of a building on the main intersection in downtown North Woodstock. The dining room had a definite schoolroom motif. The bread was buttery and it was toasted nice--not too crunchy such that it would scratch your palate. The corned beef was outstanding--rich and flavorful. The parsley flakes covering the fries and the sandwich were an interesting touch that really added to the presentation score. The Thousand Island and sauerkraut were good--they were noticeable and blended well. The cheese added good bulk to the sandwich and was tasty.

First, I just have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the Truant's Taverne. I have certain preconceptions about establishments that festoon their buildings with signs reading, "Welcome, Bikers!" Fortunately, the Taverne did not fulfill my fears. My first impression was that the servers were very friendly, and both this experience and one later on supported that impression. The Reuben itself was delightful. If anything, it could have had a touch more sauerkraut, but I see no reason to belabor my personal tastes. It was thoroughly respectable and I would be proud to invite anyone to share the experience. The sandwich also came with really good fries and a wonderful pickle spear. I ordered a Long Trail Blackberry Wheat beer to drink, and I have to say that if I could find that beer here in Indy, I would consider letting it rub shoulders with my Guinness in the fridge. I highly recommend both the beer and the sandwich if you are in North Woodstock, whether you are a biker or just an average Joe.
