Arena’s is a restaurant where you come in and seat yourself. There was a pretty big bar in a central area of the restaurant with lots of beer specials advertised.

The “Reuben’s Reuben” that they offer was a Reuben with typical ingredients, but with the addition of cole slaw. I was a little hesitant to try it, but unlike Reubens that usually have cole slaw, this one also had sauerkraut. So perhaps it would be a “cabbage-lover’s” Reuben.

The sandwich came out after a reasonable wait of 14 minutes. It was in a cute wicker basket that was actually made of plastic.

The rye bread was grilled to a crunch and had a rough surface, but was a very good bread that I enjoyed. The corned beef was also very tasty, being folded in quite a number of layers. Having the corned beef surrounded by layers of both cole slaw and sauerkraut definitely brought out some different notes than I am used to in a Reuben sandwich. The crunchiness of the cabbage pieces in the cole slaw was actually pretty nice.

The Swiss cheese had a good taste; the Thousand Island was somewhat light in its application—but it was sweet and blended with the sauerkraut. The cole slaw was creamy and a little drippy. I definitely needed frequent napkin use to keep things under control.

The pickle was fine, but not outstanding, and the chips were rather average.

I hadn’t expected to like this Reuben as much as I did. I thought that the cole slaw, as an addition, instead of being a substitute for the sauerkraut worked pretty well to make this sandwich distinctive, but still keep it safely under the Reuben umbrella. I do recommend this Reuben, and would love to go back for another one.

Arena’s is a bar-type establishment but clean and relatively quiet. The service was fine and efficient but not super friendly.

Sandwiches were served in baskets that looked like wicker, which added a touch of unexpected elegance. The cole slaw added welcome sweetness to the sandwich, and worked really well with the other elements to create a delightful taste. The bread was well-grilled but not overdone, and the pickle had a good garlicky flavor. The side of chips is never my favorite, but at least they were a different brand than Lay’s?
