Appleby's - Adam's Mark Airport

The bread was a very strong rye and the taste of caraway was quite noticeable. The sauerkraut was also very good, but the sandwich was a little too sparse with the Thousand Island dressing for me. The meat was good and was in thick slices--but only two slices. I thought that the atmosphere in the Marker Lounge, where they seated us, was excellent. The china plates and the decor made a very nice environment. The "Appleby's Chips" that came with the sandwich seemed to me to be just regular potato chips from a bag. If I were near the Indianapolis airport, chances are I would consider stopping by Appleby's for a Reuben.

Great place to eat a Reuben! If you go for lunch, you'll end up in the lounge. Nice padded chairs encourage conversation and laughter. The Reuben itself is a bit pricy, but the service makes up for the price. The sandwich contained fresh sauerkraut that tended to be the dominant flavor. If it had a little more meat (few more slices), it would have gotten a better rating. Comes with either chips or fries. The fries are still crispy even after they go cool.

The restaurant was closed, with a sign referring us to the bar, so that's where we went. Nice decor, a little dark and perhaps overly rustic, but fairly classy. Big-screen TV was a bit loud. Cold. The Reubens came out on real china plates, and we had cloth napkins and water with lemon in real glasses, so that was nice. We had a choice of fries or "Appleby's chips" with the sandwich; I opted for the chips, hoping for something homemade, but they looked just like something you'd dump out of a Lay's bag. I sampled one of their fries later, and they were pretty bland and unappetizing too. The sandwich itself could have used a bit more dressing and at least half again as much meat, but the kraut was pretty tasty. The rye bread was marbled but rather flavorless. Service was okay, but for some reason, after serving our drinks, the waitress walked by several times without taking our food order. Maybe I missed something. Anyway, I'm glad the service wasn't bad, because the gratuity had already been added to each bill automatically. Fortunately there weren't more of us on this trip otherwise, according to the menu, we would have been forced to all pay on one check. (Why do people do this? Is it that hard to print out a bill for each person? You had to keep track of who to serve the food to, right?) So, to sum up, I spent $10 (after the mandatory gratuity) on a rather small reuben without much meat, a small bag of chips, a pickle spear, and a glass of water. I won't be back unless someone else is buying, and they'd better throw in dessert so I don't go away with the unsatisfied feeling I had today.

The sauerkraut on the Reuben was very good. Unfortunately, it overpowered all of the other flavors. The sandwich could have used a bit more corned beef. Other than that, I was pleased with the ingredients. If you do go there, take a jacket, as the air conditioning is pretty powerful. I don't remember getting any other Reuben on real china, so the presentation has to get an A.

Ahh! Now that is kraut! Not that glorified cabbage some places serve, this is the real stuff. This was a good Reuben. It would have been the best if it had twice the meat. All of the ingredients were "top shelf". It simply lacked a generous amount of meat. This is why the value score was a bit low. The atmosphere took a hit due to the room temperature. It was meat locker-cold in the dining area.

Today's Reuben experience was uninspired. Luckily the company was nice.
