Scholars Inn Bakehouse

There was a lot of really good beef on this sandwich, and the cheese was thick and tasty. However, the cheese and meat were way too cold for a Reuben advertised as "(Grilled)". The bread had a strong caraway flavor, and it was good and fresh. The sauerkraut and the dressing were practically non-existent. Why is it that a place will advertise "Scholars Thousand Island sauce", and then put so little on your sandwich that you can't taste it? They should have just bought Kraft Thousand Island and nobody would have known. The chips were baked and delicious. This is the type of place where you order and pay at the counter and they call your name later to deliver your sandwich to you. The decor was trendy--sofas, stools or tables to sit at. The restaurant was very cold this December day, and you could have mistaken the bathroom for their walk-in freezer.

This Reuben wasn't as good as the one I'd had here previously, mostly because, as I'm sure other people have commented, the bread wasn't thoroughly toasted. There were definitely signs that it had been heated (the cheese was melted, for one thing) but the meat was still cool and the bread was still soft. Too bad, because the quality of the ingredients was good, especially the meat and the bread. I expect they were just in too much of a hurry. They rather skimped on the dressing and kraut too, which I don't remember being I only had half a Reuben today, because I also wanted something else I'd had here previously: the Toscana bagel. It was toasted and topped with pesto and tomato and cheese and a yummy balsalmic glaze. It was as delicious as the last one I'd had. I may have left some of the nice crunchy chips that came with both of my small lunches behind--I was rather full--even though I tried to use them to scrape up the last bits of the balsalmic glaze. The atmosphere and the service at the counter were as pleasant as I'd remembered, and the busboy actually waited for an answer this time when asking if he could take our plates. The only downside, other than the cold sandwich, was the cold restroom: take your coat.

The sandwich had all the basic stuff on it, and they were all of good quality. Mine was cold inside and all the flavors were just fighting each other for dominance. Unfortunately it wasn't that good tasting. I loved the decor, high quality menu and service.

The contemporary, art deco-ish decor really impressed me for something called a "bake house" (when ya go to a "bake" house in Broad Ripple you don't expect to see something this nice ;) ). Although... there was a side door entrance that was used quite a bit and there was no air lock and it was a bitterly cold day so I spent most of my lunch freezing (that's a REAL bad thing in my book). Otherwise, the atmosphere would have scored much higher--but it was cold enough that I'd not eat there again in the winter. I found the sandwich itself to be rather tasty; while others complained of not having their sandwich toasted/warm, mine was fine. Service was good and friendly and they had free samples of dessert (nicely done there). In summary: go spend some jack on an air lock and I'll think about coming back!! ;)

This corner of Ripple was a furniture store that last time I was down here. Well now it is a lame bake shop. The Reuben was served cold. I just hate a cold Reuben. The only positive thing about this sandwich was the generous amount of meat. The meat was not that good but you were provided a lot of it. So does double bad make a good? I don't really think so. Pass this place by unless you simply want dessert.
