A few slices of corned beef came next, followed by the top slice of rye. The sandwich was toasted in a panini press and cut down the middle. The Market Street Cafe is in an old storefront in downtown Portsmouth. The dining room had a nice wooden floor with tables lining the walls and down the middle of the room. The location had a cozy feel and gave off a “yesteryear” vibe.
The Reubens came out at 17 minutes, and clearly had the ribbed surface that one would expect from a sandwich that was processed by a panini maker. It was also very thin, coming in at only 3 centimeters in height—again, due to the nature of being a pressed sandwich.
But what was amazing, was that even though it was a thin sandwich, all of the regular Reuben ingredients were there, and in perfect proportion to one another. The corned beef, while only a few slices, was super tender, and the slices just think enough to give a nice, robust flavor. The Swiss cheese was excellent—you could actually taste the Swiss flavor! So many Reubens have Swiss on them, but the cheese flavor gets lost amid the other ingredients; I was very pleased to taste good quality Swiss.
The marbled rye was good; obviously it was smashed by the panini process, but it held up well, not being overly buttery but structurally sound enough to hold the ingredients in so that the sandwich held up well and wasn't very sloppy. A napkin is necessary, but I only needed one. The Thousand Island dressing had a sweet tang to it, and mixed well with all of the other flavors. The balance of ingredients on this sandwich was delightful.
I appreciated the pickle spear—I’m finding a pickle spear on the side to be a lot less common lately when ordering a Reuben. It makes a great palate cleanser.
The chips might have been kettle chips; they tasted like they came from a bag rather than homemade, but they were still good and not overly greasy.
I recommend the Market Street Cafe for a delightful little Reuben that's a perfect size for a quick lunch.
