G & D Steakhouse

We read about G & D Steakhouse, so we thought we would try it out. It sounded different than your normal Texas Roadhouse (which was located in the same parking lot) or Longhorn or Outback Steakhouse.

This is the type of place, where as soon as you walk in, you place your order. There was a large menu board on the wall behind the counter listing the different types of dinners and their prices. The steaks automatically came with baked potatoes. Then there was a cafeteria-like counter where you would take a tray and then pick up anything else you'd like such as a side salad, sour cream, desserts and drinks.

Katherine and I both ordered the 14 ounce Ribeye and baked potato, but we paid extra for some sour cream. Katherine got one of their side salads.

What was a little unnerving is that we ordered and paid for our food, and they never even took our name or gave us a number, or anything to match us up later to our food. However, the folks at this restaurant must pride themselves on their memories, because they were bringing out everyone's orders to the right people. Kind of impressive but I always like the extra security of getting an order number or having them know my name.

The steak arrived amazingly quickly. It was large and juicy. My ribeye was somewhat bland and I had to add quite a bit of salt and pepper to it to give it a little more flavor. However, it was a good serving size and ended up tasting delicious after I doctored it up a bit.

The baked potato was good, and I was glad we sprung the extra cash for sour cream. Even the toast tasted good.

The restaurant was pretty bare-bones inside, which seems strange for a steakhouse. But it was clear that this place had regulars, and the lady who came in before me, the folks behind the counter said, "you were here yesterday, weren't you?"

I'd definitely come by here pretty regularly if I lived near Columbia, and I'd likely eat more steak dinners than I do now.
