We stopped for lunch at the Chuck-A-Burger Drive-In Restaurant, not quite knowing what to expect. It looked intriguing from the outside, in a retro type of way. There were parking spaces out front reserved for drive-in service, so we made sure to park farther from the building for the "Inside Service".
Walking to the door, it was a little confusing. The part of the building that juts out and has its own door is where the drive-in customers are serviced. To eat inside, you must go through the door under the "Inside Service" sign.
The interior of the restaurant was clean and had a vintage flavor. There was a low counter with stools for those who wanted to sit at a counter, and then there were booths around the room. There was a tiny booth for 2 near the front door, but the waitress signaled that since they weren't busy we could sit at one of the larger booths at the back that had handwritten signs on them that reserved them for parties of 4 or more.
I ordered the single Patty Melt (ground chuck topped with grilled onions, american and swiss cheese, served on grilled texas toast) along with a "Million Dollar Orange" bottled soda. Katherine ordered the BBQ Chuck with slaw (this chuck-a-burger is smothered with barbecue sauce and topped with cole slaw) along with a Pineapple Malt.
The food came quickly enough, and the patty melt was very good. I especially liked it on the Texas Toast (they also offer rye bread for those who prefer that) and the bread and the burger were grilled just right. I wasn't a fan of the breaded onion rings, though I ate them all.
Katherine raved about the BBQ Chuck with slaw. She said that she'd have to try making something like that herself sometime.
Overall, the lady who served us was very attentive and quick. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was unique. I would definitely recommend a stop at Chuck-A-Burger.
