I pulled in for dinner at Rockne's just a little after 6 p.m. on this Saturday evening. This time of year, it was already dark. The parking lot was completely full and I had to park some distance away. There are other eateries in the same grouping of shops with Rockne's and I would suspect that dinner time on weekends is always a little crowded.
I was seated quickly and ordered a raspberry iced tea. My first impression of the restaurant is that it was a little loud. The dining room was nice-looking, with a central brick fireplace, wooden booths and a tin-style ceiling. The main floor was composed of tiny Mosaic tiles. These could be the reasons why it was a little loud in there.
The Grilled Reuben is advertised as "Our Famous savory hot corned beef piled high on rye and topped with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Rockne's Reuben dressing, then grilled just right." The sandwich is priced at $8.19. I ordered the Reuben sandwich and it was delivered in just 10 minutes.
The bread on the sandwich was very thick, and had visible caraway seeds--the bread was delicious, just the right balance between doughy and grilled. The main ingredient of the Reuben was its corned beef, which was piled on thick and juicy. The sauerkraut, dressing and cheese were okay but not really noticeable, as they were overpowered by the volume of beef. Still, it resulted in a tasty balance over all. The Reuben came accompanied by a pickle spear and a small side of Cole slaw in a tiny tortilla chip bowl, which was cute and effectively kept the Cole slaw dressing contained.
I liked my experience at Rockne's and their Reuben is worth ordering. I would definitely stop in here again and perhaps sample some of their other menu items.
